What is the McKenzie Method?
If you suffer from back pain, neck pain, or other extremity problems a McKenzie therapist may be able to assist you. Karl Koch is one of only a handful of qualified McKenzie Therapists based in Christchurch.
The McKenzie Method © was developed in New Zealand by Robin McKenzie and is used by therapists all around the world. Also known as Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® (MDT), the McKenzie Method® is based on actively involving and educating you the patient in your recovery. See the McKenzie website for further information.
How Does The McKenzie Method © Work
The McKenzie Method © is all about developing a plan that is tailored specifically to help you and your symptoms. It involves a 3-step process of assessment, treatment and prevention.
Assessment
Your therapist will carry out a comprehensive assessment to evaluate your problem. A detailed history will be taken and you will be asked to perform certain movements so that your therapist can assess any symptom changes (ie. increase or decrease in pain).
Treatment
Based on the findings from your assessment your therapist will then prescribe a series of customised exercises for you to perform. You, the patient, will be actively involved in self-managing your symptoms.
Prevention
Prevention is the key. Once you know how to self manage, you can help prevent or minimise a repeat occurrence of your problem in the future by adopting the methods you have been taught to manage your pain. Exercise and fitness advice is often an important component of our treatment plan. We will tailor a programme to suit your needs and lifestyle.
